Finding Your Blogging Niche

Posted by Albert at 19th October, 2007

Before starting a blog, you should consider carefully which niche topic you are going to blog about. This is especially important if your blog is being set up for the purpose of monetary purposes. Ideally you should select a blog subject about which you are passionate and knowledgeable about. Still, you need to take into consideration the level of competition in the niche subject as well as the purpose of your blog before starting your own blog. This post will discuss these considerations in greater detail in an attempt to assists new bloggers in choosing a subject for a new blog.

Isolating Your Interests

One of the first considerations for a new blogger is his personal interests. This is especially important because a blogger who is passionate and knowledgeable about a particular subject will not only have an easy time coming up with ideas for new blog posts but will also likely be highly successful. Your readers will be able to sense your passion for the topic and will continue to support you which in turn will lead to a successful blog.

Your interests and passions may be obscured and of interest to a small group of people but please do not let this discourage you from blogging about the things you are interested and passionate about. While the idea to go for a more general subject is good, it does not mean you will succeed if you lack the passion and interest for that particular topic. But then if you are going to monetize your blog through high traffic, you should consider selecting a topic which appeals to a larger audience.

Evaluating the Competition

After deciding on a niche topic or topics, it’s time to spy around your competition. :) Visit blogs in your niche and evaluate them. If your niche market is already saturated with blogs and there are quite a number of established and quality blogs, please do not be disheartened. Simply study and list down all the pros and cons of each blog in detail. Be honest with yourself here. Consolidate all the information and work out a plan to beat the shit out of them.

Considering the Purpose of Your Blog

What is the purpose of your blog? This is one of the major considerations when deciding on a niche topic. Blogs can be created for a variety of reasons including monetary purposes or personal use.

For personal blogs, it’s highly unlikely for you to be able to garner high traffic unless you are a celebrity or your blog offer something that will interest lots of people. Unless you already have a huge network of friends who are dying to read what you blog about daily, it will take you more time to monetize your blog.

For those who are using their blogs to generate profit through promoting affiliate products or services, you should take into consideration whether the market is already saturated with blogs promoting the same products or services. If there are too much competition, sometimes it’s simply not worth your time and effort to go into that particular niche topic. You should spend your time and effort on a more worthy project instead.

One final word, if you set up a blog for monetization, please ensures you are consistent in your postings. While you may not be able to blog in perfect English, what is more important is your own writing style and personality that you inject into your blog post. Many successful blogs’ owners are not professional writers yet they are able to write stuff that captivates their audience. Go figure that out!
