HTML is still one of the best web design languages to use when designing your website. Even though there are more sophisticated ways or languages to design your website, you can never go wrong with the plain old HTML if you want to please the search engine spiders.
If you are new to web design and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and you are designing your first website using HTML, the following tips below will stand you in good stead when designing your website.
1) Always start with the HTML codes or tags commonly found on top of your HTML design page. Always begin and end your document with an HTML tag or with <HTML> and </HTML>. The slash before each code indicates the end. These tags are very important because without them, search engine spiders will have no way of knowing what kind of language your website is “speaking”.
Another important element to take note is the head tags or <HEAD> and </HEAD> which indicate preliminary information regarding your website. One element found in the head of a page is title or <TITLE> and </TITLE>. Even though you may not have any plans of placing a title for your website, it’s still better to have one. And you need to include the appropriate keywords with it because search engine spiders prioritize title information when indexing websites.
Another important element is the META tags – basically these are simply keywords that could help search engine spiders to accurately categorize your website. Be careful when choosing which words to use as your META tags. You have to be as specific as possible and make sure you’ve spelled the terms correctly.
The general styling effects and JAVA commands for your website will also be part of your page’s header. Please ensure that you use the appropriate font style, color, and size to make them easily readable.
The body of your HTML page should starts and ends with the codes <BODY> and </BODY>. This is where the main content of your website is found. Design has little to do with the optimization of content for search engines. If you’re concerned about SEO, you should focus on creating keyword-rich content for your website.
2) Try to avoid using frames in your website because they are more difficult for search engine spiders to index. It also does not help when users whose frame options are disabled would not be able to view your website properly. If you really have no choice but to use frames, just make sure that you also create no-frame HTML tags so that people using frame-disabled browsers will know why they can’t view your page.
3) If you are using tables on your websites, try to avoid having your tables overlap each other. When overlapping occurs, these will result in messed-up HTML codes and make it hard for search engine spiders to index. The best way is to keep your HTML tags clean and simple instead.
4) When using images and other media files, make sure you label and add captions to them. This is necessary because search engine spiders simply loved it. Also make sure if the image file is too huge, include the thumbnails too.
5) Use HTML editors that can help you in optimizing your website for search engine. You can search for these HTML editors online. Basic web design programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver are not equipped to optimize your website for SEO purposes. Rather these web design programs are meant to help you design your website to look more attractive and functional.
